What we do.

Most of our clients are businesses, families and organisations with roots in the West of England and Wales. Many of them use more than one of our practices, and the partners talk to each other.

If you aren’t sure which kind of lawyer you need, write to us and we will work it out with you.

Corporate & Commercial

We act for owner-managed and family businesses when they buy, sell, raise money or change hands. Since 2019 a growing share of that work has been transfers to Employee Ownership Trusts, where founders sell to a trust that holds the business for its staff.

Day to day, we draft and negotiate the contracts businesses run on: supply, distribution, agency and services agreements, and the shareholder agreements that keep the owners on speaking terms. We also advise on who owns software and other intellectual property, how it is licensed, and data protection under UK GDPR.

Typical matters

  • Sales and acquisitions
  • Employee ownership trusts
  • Investment rounds
  • Shareholder agreements
  • Commercial contracts
  • IP, licensing and data protection

Led by Priya Raman, London, and Daniel Whitcombe, Bristol

Real Estate

We act for landowners, developers, investors and occupiers buying, selling, letting and developing land and buildings across the South West and South Wales.

We also act for leaseholders, residents’ management companies and freeholders on building-safety remediation, including the routes created by the Building Safety Act 2022.

Typical matters

  • Acquisitions and disposals
  • Development agreements
  • Landlord and tenant
  • Building-safety remediation
  • Planning-related agreements

Led by Helen Marchbank, Bristol

Dispute Resolution

Most disputes are lost in the first letter and won in the second meeting. We tell you early what we think a case is worth, what it will cost to run, and whether it should settle. When it should, we settle it. When it shouldn’t, we prepare it properly for trial.

Typical matters

  • Contract and supply claims
  • Shareholder disputes
  • Professional negligence
  • Property and construction
  • Mediation and arbitration

Led by Miriam Okafor-Hale, Bristol, and Catherine Anstey, London

Employment

We advise employers on the contracts, policies and processes that prevent most employment disputes, and defend the claims that still arise. We also act for senior executives negotiating the terms on which they leave.

Typical matters

  • Contracts and handbooks
  • Restructures and redundancies
  • Disciplinary and grievance
  • Employment tribunal claims
  • Senior executive exits

Led by Samuel Ashdown, Bristol

Private Client

We help people decide what should happen to what they own, and help their families when the time comes. Much of this work is for business owners and farming families, where the estate and the livelihood are the same thing.

Typical matters

  • Wills and trusts
  • Estate administration
  • Lasting powers of attorney
  • Court of Protection
  • Succession planning

Led by Thomas Bell, Bristol

Family

When a relationship ends, you need to know what is likely to happen before you decide what to do. We tell you that in the first meeting, and we look for an agreement before we look for a courtroom.

Typical matters

  • Divorce and dissolution
  • Financial settlements
  • Arrangements for children
  • Pre- and post-nuptial agreements
  • Cohabitation disputes

Led by Fiona Gillespie, Bristol

Rural & Estates

This is where the firm began. We act for farming families, landowners and trustees on tenancies, partnerships, diversification and the hard conversation about who takes the farm on. The practice runs jointly from Bristol and Cardiff, so it covers both English and Welsh law.

Typical matters

  • Agricultural tenancies
  • Farm partnerships
  • Succession planning
  • Diversification projects
  • Sale and division of estates

Led by Owen Treharne, Cardiff

Charities & Housing

From Cardiff we act for charities and housing associations on governance, mergers, regulatory consents and the property work that follows them, in English and in Welsh.

Typical matters

  • Governance and constitutions
  • Mergers and group structures
  • Regulatory consents
  • Stock transfers

Led by Rhodri Pryce, Cardiff
